Andrea Varazzani – Mastery and the Art of Decoration
Andrea Varazzani was born in Naples in 1982, but it was in Cremona that he discovered his true calling: violin making. After graduating from the “Antonio Stradivari” International School of Violin Making, he refined his craft while working with Daniele Tonarelli and opened his own workshop in Sesto Cremonese in 2006. Today he is one of the most esteemed luthiers on the international scene, with instruments sought after by musicians worldwide.
His creations, entirely handmade, draw inspiration from the classical Cremonese tradition and are often enriched with artistic ornaments, carvings, inlays, and oil decorations that give every piece a unique historical charm.
Collection and Customization
Each violin, viola, or cello crafted by Varazzani is the result of meticulous wood selection, refined acoustic sensitivity, and close collaboration with the musician.
Andrea creates violas, violins, and cellos, favouring personal models and copies of historical instruments, with a focus on tonal performance and playing comfort.
Philosophy and Materials
Setup is one of the most critical stages of the process: Andrea works closely with musicians, listening to them and testing the instrument together to achieve the ideal configuration. From the bridge to the soundpost, every part of the setup is designed to achieve the best in tone, balance, and comfort.
He uses transparent and brilliant oil and alcohol varnishes, applied by hand to enhance both aesthetics and acoustics. Every instrument is a one-of-a-kind creation, shaped to the client’s needs.
Decoration and Art: the Distinctive Touch
The decorations, entrusted to restorer Luca Penzani, evoke the historical works of Renaissance and Baroque violin making—particularly those by Andrea Amati—creating authentic playable artworks.
This artistic approach, combined with acoustic excellence, makes each creation not only a musical instrument but also a collectible object of great artistic value.
Experience and Collaborations
Andrea has participated several times in the International Triennial Violinmaking Competition “Antonio Stradivari” and has received prestigious awards, including the bronze medal at the national competition in Pisogne. He is a member of the “Antonio Stradivari” Luthiers’ Consortium and the Associazione Liutaria Italiana (A.L.I.).
Although he has taught at the Cremona Violin Making School, he now dedicates himself full-time to his workshop, supported by collaborators, in order to meet the high demand from international musicians. His creations are cherished by performers, collectors, and institutions, standing as living symbols of contemporary Italian violin making.
